OutletGuard: The Easiest Way to Babyproof a Coaxial Outlet (trust me, I tried them all)
It’s every parent’s worst nightmare – an innocent moment of play with your child winds up in a trip to the ER. My family came dangerously close to such an event, so I set out to help others prevent the same thing from happening to them. We were in the living room, delighting in my infant son’s attempt to walk across the carpeted floor. In a split second, he lost his balance and fell back into the wall, grazing his head on an exposed coaxial jack. Lots of tears – from my son and me. Thankfully just a bruise. I bee-lined to the child safety section of one store and then another, and then a third and still couldn’t find any coaxial outlet covers.
I searched online and here are the least effective babyproofing hacks I found:
Move furniture in front of the coaxial outlet. This might work for some, but in my house it totally throws off the design and functionality of the room.
Stick some duct tape over the coaxial stud. Silver tape was unsightly. White tape blended in. But both didn’t last too long before fraying and falling off. Plus we realized it presented a choking hazard to both our curious kids and pets.
Replace the coaxial outlet plate. OK, this one took a lot of time. I bought a blank white wall plate and unscrewed the current one. Then I disassembled the coaxial stud, wound up the coaxial cable, and shoved it into the junction box. Finally, I installed the new blank panel. OK, this worked – but what happens should we need to use the outlet someday? Find the old cover and reverse the whole process!
So, what’s the best way to babyproof coaxial studs and data outlets?
The OutletGuard coaxial outlet cover, included in the OutletGuard Variety Pack, offers a simple 5-second solution. Twist it onto the coaxial stud. That’s it. And when you need to use the coaxial outlet for broadband Internet or television – simply twist it off. The torque needed is beyond a baby or infant’s grasp – and by the time a curious kid notices it, they likely won’t find it of interest. This product is small enough to blend into the wall, yet too large to present a choking hazard.
